Bad Ischl, Austria

View of Bad Ischl

My fall break began with a trip to Bad Ischl, Austria, where Maija's grandparents live. Or rather, where they live part of the time. Bad Ischl is a sleepy - though obviously wealthy - town, with mountain views and the lovely smell of cow poop wafting over the neighboring fields, which lies almost due east of Salzburg. Driving there would have taken less than an hour; naturally, our train ride took two and a half. It seems that nothing is direct in Austria, which is a stark change from the directness (and timeliness) of the Germans that I was used to in Freiburg.

Maija and I took our two and a half hour train ride to Bad Ischl on a Friday, and spent most of the weekend hanging around, watching ski races or Jim Gaffigan, eating Oma's cooking and hearing stories about the 'good old days' in Austria and Wisconsin. Maija's Oma is originally from Linz, Austria, and her grandfather is originally from Wisconsin. Though it was fairly cold and rainy the entire time, we still managed to help them rake all of the leaves that had fallen around their vacation home in Attersee (located between Bad Ischl and Salzburg on a gorgeous lake). Joey, their giant dog of uncertain pedigree, was the most helpful member of this party. When he wasn't lying on the leaf bags, he was running up and down the lake shore barking at the waves. Joey is also larger than Oma, so walking him became quite a task when the cows were in the fields or when he spotted a cat in the road - both of which happened. All in all, though, it was nice to be in a real house, complete with a dog and home cooking!

Look, Dad! I found a fishing store!
This is apparently the best way to tour Bad Ischl

...it matched my scarf
Cows outside of Maija's grandparents' house. The same cows that Joey desperately wanted to chase. The cows were unfazed.

And then it snowed on our way back from Bad Ischl
